Armistead Maupin shares his "Tales"

San Francisco novelist Armistead Maupin had his Sacramento audience by the tale last night during a gathering of The Bee Book Club. Maupin entertained the more than 200 readers with tales of The City, life on the road and the upcoming musical version of his hugely popular "Tales of The City."

Maupin and his novel "Mary Ann in Autumn" concludedThe Bee's 2010 Book Club series and he certainly closed the year with an entertaining and laugh-out-loud presentation. He described how "Tales" got started - as a series of articles in "The Pacific Sun" - a small newspaper in Marin County. How the San Francisco Chronicle picked up the serial and turned a weekly story into one that ran daily. And how his editors at the Chronilce kept track of his straight and gay characters.

He also shared stories about his celebrity friends. Laura Linney - the current star of The Big C on Showtime and a character in the "Tales" miniseries - read a poem at his wedding and he did the same at hers.

Maupin took questions from the enthusiastic audience then stayed on for 90 minutes to sign books. After the signing, Maupin got in his car and made the trek back to The City.
