Editorial: Jerry Brown brings broader mix to Hall of Fame

(March 24 -- By the Editorial Board)

Say what you will about Gov. Jerry Brown, but there's no doubt that he has brought a keener eye and more eclectic taste to the California Hall of Fame.

The new class inducted last week included some well-known luminaries - legendary 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, actor Warren Beatty and movie icons the Warner brothers, Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack.

But the seventh class also included Gregory Bateson, a UC Santa Cruz social scientist who later served on the UC board of regents; Charles and Ray Eames, groundbreaking furniture and furnishing designers with Sacramento ties; Ishi, who was believed to be the last of the Yahi people; and Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers.

Brown's second group of selections continued a welcome trend - and a noticeable shift from his predecessor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. With his wife Maria Shriver, the former actor seemed intent on recognizing glitzy Hollywood celebrities and others who already had acclaim.

Brown and first lady Anne Gust Brown, on the other hand, are celebrating more people who aren't necessarily household names and whose accomplishments are in different areas.

California is a big, diverse state with people doing great things in varied fields of endeavor. It's heartening that its Hall of Fame is increasingly reflecting that.
