(Oct. 28) If Monterey Park Democrat Ed Chau comes off as reserved compared to his more voluble freshman counterparts, that could reflect his past employment.
Having worked as a systems engineer for IBM and as an attorney, including as a judge pro tem for the Los Angeles Superior Court, Chau said he came to develop an interest in protecting consumer privacy.
"Technology has been advancing very rapidly in recent years," Chau said, "and it is important that we handle personal information very carefully. Oftentimes the average consumer does not know or understand how their information is being handled or used by third parties."
Chau's also boasts a background that accords with his representing the first Asian-American majority state legislative district, the redrawn 49th. Born in Hong Kong, he speaks and writes fluent Chinese.
"I think with my language ability I think I could serve these particular constituents more effectively," Chau said.
