The latest on California politics and government

There's bad news for U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer in the latest Field Poll.

All three Republicans vying to challenge the three-term Democratic senator are within striking distance in hypothetical match-ups.

While Boxer held double-digit leads over each of the GOP Senate hopefuls in January, she's now in a statistical dead-heat with two would-be challengers.

The poll, released today, puts Boxer's support within one-point of Tom Campbell and Carly Fiorina and puts her four points ahead of Assemblyman Chuck DeVore.

"We're obviously in a very tough political environment where voters are understandably frustrated with the economy, and we're facing an (off-year) electorate that's naturally more conservative," Boxer campaign manager Rose Kapolczynski tells colleague Rob Hotakainen in today's Bee. "We always thought this was going to be a challenging race, and now it's clear this is going to be the toughest Boxer campaign yet."

In the heated GOP primary, Campbell leads Fiorina by six points, 28 percent to 22 percent. GOP Assemblyman Chuck DeVore trails with 9 percent of the vote. (He told The Bee yesterday that one culprit for his poor showing is the candidate job descriptions used by the pollsters.)

Meanwhile, the ongoing battle over which GOP candidate loves Israel the most continues today.

In the latest wave of statements and news conferences on the matter, Fiorina cried foul at the White House's not-so-warm reaction to the news that Israel was planning to construct more settlements in east Jerusalem.

DeVore follows up with a 9:30 a.m. presser outside the Consulate of Israel in Los Angeles on "the Obama administration's shameful treatment of America's ally Israel."

And Campbell plans to call on the administration make it clear that "Israel will have the United States' support if they take a stand to destroy Iran's nuclear capability before it is operational" in an evening address at the World Affairs Council in San Francisco.

BIRTHDAYS: It's the big day for two lower-house lawmakers, Republican Bill Berryhill, 52, and Democrat Alberto Torrico, 41.

An earlier version of this post said that Boxer held a one-point lead over two GOP challengers. She leads Fiorina by one point, but trails Campbell by one point.
