The latest on California politics and government

Democrat Chris Kelly has contributed an additional $4 million to his attorney general campaign, thus doubling the amount he has donated to his effort to succeed Jerry Brown as the state's top law enforcement officer.

Kelly, former chief privacy officer for Facebook, touted his total $8 million contribution as a way for his campaign to educate voters about his candidacy without becoming beholden to special interests.

"As the only non-politician in this race, I have never been the establishment candidate and will not be beholden to any special interests," Kelly said in a written statement Tuesday. "My priority will always be ensuring public safety for all Californians."

Kelly's $8 million contribution targets a job that pays only $151,127 a year, meaning he never could recover enough in salary to recoup the personal funds spent on campaigning.

Kelly's opponents in the June 8 Democratic primary for attorney general include Kamala Harris, San Francisco district attorney; Rocky Delgadillo, former Los Angeles city attorney; and Assemblymen Alberto Torrico of Newark, Ted Lieu of Torrance, and Pedro Nava of Santa Barbara. Attorney Mike Schmier also is running but has not been active in fundraising.

Brian Brokaw, Harris' campaign manager, said recently that voters typically gauge candidates by their track record and are "not swayed by candidates who will spend millions in an attempt to buy an office."

Kelly, in a meeting with The Bee's Capitol Bureau earlier this month, said he does not think that voters will hold it against candidates like himself or GOP gubernatorial hopeful Meg Whitman for digging into their own pocketbooks to help fund their campaigns.
