GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner's controversial depiction of Mount Pleasant High School in San Jose will hit the public radio airwaves this week on the show "This American Life," according to show spokeswoman Emily Condon.
Poizner reportedly participated in the program despite criticizing GOP rival Meg Whitman during last month's debate for listening to National Public Radio, sniping, "Another major difference between Meg and me: I don't listen to NPR."
The program also attempted to contact the high school's students via Facebook, said Eddie Garcia, president of the East Side Union High School District.
Poizner ran into trouble with some of the school's students, teachers and administrators last month after he released his memoir about the year he spent volunteering there.
Some weren't happy with parts of the book describing Poizner's initial low expectations of the school's students and dealing with teenage pregnancies and gang violence at the school. A crowd of protesters confronted Poizner at a book signing in San Jose.
Catch the show at noon and 10 p.m. Saturday on KQEI 89.3 FM in Sacramento or at noon and 6 p.m. Saturday on KXJZ 90.9 FM in Sacramento. The program can be heard online at 5 p.m. Pacific time Sunday.
