Panel cuts redistricting commission applicant pool in half

A panel charged with vetting Californians applying to be one of 14 members of the first-of-its-kind Citizens Redistricting Commission cut the remaining pool of aspiring political map drawers in half yesterday.

The panel axed 309 applicants who did not receive a favorable recommendation from at least one of three appointed reviewers. Most of those cut were missing information in their applications or were deemed less qualified than other applicants.

The remaining 314 applicants must fill out a Statement of Economic Interest form disclosing their income and large gifts. From there, the panel will select 120 applicants -- 40 Democrats, 40 Republicans and 40 voters who are decline-to-state voters or registered with other parties -- for the interview stage.
