Ami Bera, the Democratic nominee in the 3rd Congressional District, didn't cast a vote for federal health care legislation. But that's not stopping critics from blasting the first-time candidate over the Democrat-backed plan.
American Crossroads, a conservative group with ties to GOP strategist Karl Rove, is airing a spot saying the Elk Grove doctor doesn't think the overhaul of the nation's health care system goes far enough.
The ad, posted below, claims that the legislation championed by President Barack Obama will result in billions of dollars in new taxes, higher insurance premiums and steep cuts to Medicare.
"Ami Bera and ObamaCare, they're bad medicine for California," a narrator says.
American Crossroads and its affiliate Crossroads GPS have spent tens of millions of dollars to boost Republican candidates across the country. The organization's tax-exempt status allows it to raise and spend unlimited funds from anonymous donors.
Bera's challenge against incumbent Republican Rep. Dan Lungren of Gold River is a top target for Democrats.
The Bera campaign responded by criticizing Lungren for not supporting stricter campaign finance disclosure laws. Lucinda Guinn, Bera's campaign manager, said support from the group shows Lungren is "looking out for himself and his corporate campaign contributors, not middle-class families."
Bera, meanwhile, launched a new spot featuring testimonials from supporters. Voters in the 30-second spot praise Bera as a "fresh voice" while presenting Lungren as "just another career politician" out of touch with the district. Watch that spot here.
