Assembly Speaker John A. Perez, D-Los Angeles, has never been shy about how he feels about Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. But at a rally in Van Nuys this afternoon with gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown and other Democrats, Perez went after him again.
"I just got done with a 100-day budget process, negotiating with what I thought was the biggest jerk in the world," he said.
Perez said the Republican gubernatorial nominee, Meg Whitman, is a "Schwarzenegger clone."
Whitman, compared by Brown to Schwarzenegger in a recent advertisement, has said she has some of the same ideas Schwarzenegger had, but that where he failed in implementing them, she could succeed. The former eBay CEO has said her background is much different than the film star's.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, also spoke at the Van Nuys rally. Newsom, who once sought to be governor, appeared with Brown at churches earlier in the day, waving to congregants but never asked to speak. He said after the rally, "It was all for Jerry."
In Van Nuys, Newsom said he is "extraordinarily enthusiastic" about Brown. Asked if it stung at all to campaign together, he said "Oh, no."
