The latest on California politics and government

MaldonadoBus.JPGRepublican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has spent the final stretch of the campaign traversing the state aboard a big green bus that blares "JOBS are on the way."

With eight days to go until Election Day, Whitman's prospective second-in-command is hitting the road on a bus tour of his own.

Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado kicked off a week-long "Only In California" campaign swing today.

Maldonado's bus, emblazoned with his picture and the words "Jobs Jobs Jobs," was scheduled to make stops in National City, San Diego, Del Mar and Oceanside Pier today.

Don't expect to see a campaign bus caravan on California roadways. The Maldonado camp says there are no plans for the two Republicans at the top of the ticket to appear together on the campaign trail between now and Election Day.

"We're just getting the message out to as many people as possible," spokeswoman Brooke Armour said.

Maldonado, a Republican appointed to the lieutenant governor seat by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, , is running against San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom for a full term at the post.
