The latest on California politics and government

An independent committee backing Democratic insurance commissioner nominee Dave Jones is ramping up its spending in the final days of the election.

California Alliance, a committee funded by trial lawyers, labor unions and conservation groups, reported spending $420,000 this week -- $210,000 to support Jones and $210,000 to oppose Republican nominee Mike Villines.

As Bee colleague Jon Ortiz wrote this week, the race has attracted high spending from groups on both sides of the fight. The insurance industry has poured more than $3 million into independent expenditures to boost Villines, more than twice what the Jones supporters have spent on the race so far.
