Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a slew of appointments today, including tapping his deputy chief of staff for an unpaid post planning the Mid-State Fair.

Fred Aguiar, a former GOP state legislator who previously served as cabinet secretary, secretary of the State and Consumer Services Agency and a member of the Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, has been appointed to the California Mid-State Fair Board of Directors. The position does not require Senate confirmation.

Schwarzenegger also appointed a Senate staff member to a spot on the Gambling Control Commission.

Sacramento resident Tiffany Conklin, a Republican, has served as chief of staff to Sen. Tom Harman, R-Huntington Beach, since 2002. She was previously a legislative fellow assigned to his Assembly office.

The position, which pays a salary of $128,109, requires Senate confirmation.
