The latest on California politics and government

Jerry Brown.JPGGov.-elect Jerry Brown will be sworn in Jan. 3 at Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium and will host an inaugural reception at the California State Railroad Museum that afternoon, Brown's office said.

The swearing-in ceremony will be at 11 a.m., the reception at 4 p.m.

The 72-year-old former governor, confronting a budget deficit he has estimated could be $28 billion over the next 18 months, said this month he was planning "something elegant but modest" for the inauguration.

For his first inauguration, in 1975, Brown attended a prayer breakfast, gave one of the shortest inaugural addresses in state history and ate dinner, unannounced, at a Chinese restaurant in Los Angeles.

His second inaugural, in 1979, was similarly reserved.
