Less than a year after losing the battle to be California's chief executive, former Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman is taking the helm as president and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard.

The company announced today that Whitman, who joined HP's board of directors earlier this year, was tapped to replace outgoing CEO Léo Apotheker.

The move puts Whitman in the same post formerly held by another GOP candidate on last year's ballot -- U.S. Senate hopeful Carly Fiorina.
