Republican Pedro Rios' candidacy has sparked controversy in a Central Valley Assembly district after it was publicly revealed that he came to the United States, at age 9, as an undocumented immigrant.

Rios, who is now a legal citizen, is running against Democrat Rudy Salas in the 32nd Assembly District of Kern and Kings counties.

Reporter Jose Gaspar, in a Bakersfield Californian column, describes the local Republican Party as in "damage control mode" over the Rios revelation.
