The latest on California politics and government

VIDEO: Dan Walters discusses the latest revelations of a supposedly cash-strapped state agency getting caught with a hidden pot of money.

Lawmakers are holding a press conference pledging their support for a federal immigration overhaul. Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville, will be joined by Sen. Anthony Cannella, R-Ceres; Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens; Assemblyman V. Manuel Pérez, D-Coachella; Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian, R-San Luis Obispo; Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, D-Sacramento; and Assemblyman Jeff Gorell, R-Camarillo. Starting at 10:30 a.m. in room 317 of the State Capitol.

There's obviously a good deal of wrangling to come before the Senate bill assumes its final form, but it bears noting that it calls for a commission of governors, attorneys general and border denizens to help shape a tougher enforcement framework. Gov. Jerry Brown has already said he hopes to play a role in the national immigration push, so it will be interesting to see how he might interact with gubernatorial counterparts like Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona, a Republican and leading antagonist of the Obama administration.

Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be participating in a panel discussion on climate change today. The bad news is that the event, part of the "R20 Conference" on sustainable energy, will be held in Schwarzenegger's native country of Austria; the good news is that it will be webcast live on the conference's website and on the website of USC's USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy. From 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. PST.

Robert Kleinhenz, chief economist at the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, will be hosting a lunchtime talk on the economic outlook for 2013. The event will be held at the Sacramento Press Club and gets underway at noon; we are told meatloaf will be involved.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson will be speaking at a gathering of superintendents in Monterey today. In addition to praising retiring school administrators, Torlakson will talk about the education budget and California's rollout of national Common Core standards. Starting at noon in the Monterey Conference Center.

The UC Center Sacramento Speaker Series continues with a talk on small voter groups, conducted by University of California, Riverside political science professor Kevin Esterling. From 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 1130 K St., Room LL3.

Back on Capitol Hill, Rep. George Miller, D-Martinez, is hosting a conference call with college student reporters to discuss the fees associated with processing student aid requests. The call begins at 11:00 a.m. PST.

• Do not attack other users; focus your comments on issues, not individuals.

• Do not copy and paste outside material into the comment box.

• Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.

• Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.
