The latest on California politics and government

CARealignment.jpgThere has been ample news lately about California's ongoing push to slim its prison population. That has included the legal tug-of-war between the federal courts and Gov. Jerry Brown, which most recently yielded a court order demanding that California immediately prepare to release more inmates, not to mention legislative pushback. It also looks likely to be a key issue in the 2014 gubernatorial campaign, assuming a matchup between the Democratic governor and Republican Abel Maldonado.

A Public Policy Institute of California event today will try to cut through the noise and look at the concrete consequences of realignment, from county jails to public safety. Listed speakers include Sen. Loni Hancock, D-Berkeley; Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson; California State Association of Counties executive director Matthew Cate; and Linda Penner, chief probation officer for the Fresno County Probation Department. At the CSAC conference center, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

VIDEO: It was a busy day at the state Capitol Thursday, but Dan Walters says California's attention should be trained on Washington.

BACK TO THE DISTRICT: With the imminent departure of Assemblyman Bob Blumenfield, D-Los Angeles, for his newly secured spot on the L.A. City Council, the Assembly has been pushing to hold any two-thirds votes before Blumenfield's absence deprives Democrats of their supermajority. They succeeded with the enterprise-zone bill Thursday, which means lawmakers can rest easy knowing they'll be able to head home this weekend.

STATE FAIR: The California State Fair is coming up in a few weeks (lawmakers have already gotten to hand out some awards for wines), and today the Cal Expo board of directors is meeting to go over things like ticket sales and its marketing campaign. The meeting starts at 10 a.m. at the fairground on Exposition Boulevard.

MUSLIM YOUTH: High schoolers from across California are in town for a youth leadership program run by the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The students will be meeting with lawmakers today and holding the obligatory mock legislative session Saturday.

CELEBRATIONS: Happy birthday to Sen. Marty Block, D-San Diego, who is 63 today. Two more on Saturday: Assemblyman Das Williams, D-Santa Barbara, is turning 39, and Assemblyman Henry T. Perea, D-Fresno, will be a tender 36.
