There's a lot of talk at City Hall today that Councilwoman Sandy Sheedy is going to jump into the mayoral race.
Several insiders told me today that Sheedy is considering running against Mayor Kevin Johnson and that she plans to file her campaign documents today. If she is, she has until 4:30 p.m. today to file those papers to meet the city's deadline for mayoral candidates to declare.
Sheedy has not returned my phone call seeking comment.
She has already said she would not seek a fourth term in her council district representing north Sacramento neighborhoods. Six candidates have lined up for the seat.
Sheedy has been the most vocal opponent of the plan to build a new sports arena in the downtown railyard. She and Councilman Kevin McCarty both voted against the arena's financing plan on Tuesday.
Besides the arena, Sheedy has been an opponent of virtually all of Johnson's initiatives, including his various attempts at enacting a strong mayor form of government at City Hall. That's a shift from 2008, when Sheedy was one of Johnson's most prominent backers in his run for mayor against incumbent Heather Fargo.
Check back to City Beat later in the day for updates, including a final list of who is running for mayor.
