Turns out, there are more than just a few people interested in spending the next two years diving into the city's constitution.
A grand total of 56 city residents have filed paperwork seeking to run for a seat on the elected charter commission (the signatures collected by 17 candidates are still being verified). Voters will be asked in November if they want to create that commission and, if so, to choose 15 candidates to serve on the panel.
Many of the names on the candidate list are recognizable, most notably former Mayor Heather Fargo.
Fargo told me this morning that she's "not really a big fan of the commission," but that if one is created, she thinks she would be a valuable resource for the process.
"I don't think there's a big hue and cry in the community to spend time on the charter," she said. "But if there's going to be a discussion to make changes, I'd like to be part of that discussion."
Fargo spent 11 years as a councilwoman representing Natomas and downtown, followed by two terms as mayor. She was defeated in the 2008 election by Mayor Kevin Johnson.
This time around, Fargo doesn't expect to do much campaigning.
"I hope people will remember who I am and what I know," she said.
