A former employee of a beer distributing company learned the hard way that trying to put a slick move on his bosses isn't as easy as doing it on a basketball court.
Dylan Demoss, 22, of Sacramento was sentenced to 60 days in the Placer County jail this week and ordered to pay $4,000 in restitution and fines for collecting workers' compensation after lying about how he was injured on the job, the Placer District Attorney's Office reported.
More from Art Campos:
Demoss claimed he injured his left knee in November 2006 while carrying a case of beer to a Raley's supermarket in Auburn, said Scott Owens, senior deputy district attorney.
After filing for workers' compensation through his employer, Mussetter Distributing Inc. of Auburn, Demoss received benefits and medical treatment, Owens said.
But a subsequent probe by insurance investigators revealed that Demoss was not at the supermarket on the date of the alleged injury, Owens said. They discovered that Demoss injured his knee while playing basketball with friends, he said.
On Tuesday, Demoss pleaded no contest to a felony charge of insurance fraud and was given jail time, the monetary penalties and three years probation by a judge, Owens said.
"Fraudulent workers' compensation claims such as this one have the tendency to make it harder for legitimate injured workers to recover the benefits to which they are entitled," Owens said in a news release.
