Placer sheriff's detectives say they may have busted up a shoplifting ring with arrests last week of two men whose alleged merchandise theft was captured by a store surveillance camera.
When caught, the men, both of Honduras, had more than $10,000 worth of stolen merchandise in their vehicle, Lt. Jeffrey Ausnow said.
The incident occurred Wednesday when the suspects entered a Bel-Air market in Auburn and began taking shaving razors and over-the-counter medications, Ausnow said.
One of the men wore specially altered trousers that allowed him to conceal up to 30 items in the pants legs, Ausnow said.
Dennis Antonio Garcia, 24, was arrested by sheriff's deputies as he left the store, he said.
The second man, Marlon Castellano, 27, fled but was captured an hour later when he returned to the getaway vehicle parked near the store, Ausnow said.
They were booked on suspicion of burglary, grand theft and conspiracy, he said. In addition, the Placer County jail roster shows that both are being held for immigration officials for illegal entry into the United States.
Ausnow said detectives believe that the men are key members of a ring that sells the stolen items at discounts to small stores or at swap meets.
