Scam alert: Gas station schemes

From Bill Lindelof:

With gas prices rising, Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig provided tips to citizens in order to avoid scams.

Reisig noted in a news release that a motorist at a West Sacramento gas station was recently approached by a young woman holding an empty gas can. She claimed her car had run out of gas and that she was stranded without money to fill the can.

The good Samaritan motorist filled the can for the woman but later noticed that she promptly got another can to get more free gas from somebody else.

Two other gas-related rip-offs were noted by Reisig:

• Be aware if someone offers to help hang up the pump nozzle after you are finished pumping gas. A scam artist will use that opportunity to fill his own vehicle after you have driven away.

• Watch out for devices placed over ATM card readers at the gas pump. Called "skimmers," the devices steal debit card information.
