The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department reports that a suspect believed to be the Straw Hat Bandit, left, was arrested last week. Authorities believe that Michael Osgood, 47, of North Highlands, is responsible for seven Sacramento-area and one Stockton-area bank robberies dating back to April 30.
According to a department news release, at 4:56 p.m. June 9, Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies responded to the report of an attempted bank robbery at the Sterlent Credit Union, 2468 Watt Ave. Deputies arrived and were told by credit union employees a man they believe was the suspect who robbed them a month ago tried to enter the credit union to rob them again, authorities reported.
The suspect fled when employees refused to let him into the business. At 5:44 p.m. that day, sheriff's deputies responded to the report of a bank robbery at the U.S. Bank inside the Safeway at 3320 Arden Way. The description of the suspect matched the description of the Straw Hat Bandit, authorities said.
While en route to the crime scene, a responding Sheriff's K-9 Unit deputy spotted the suspect in a vehicle driving on Watt Avenue. He, along with sheriff's patrol deputies and a California Highway Patrol officer, stopped the vehicle at Edison and Watt avenues and detained the suspect. According to sheriff's officials, witnesses from the credit union and the bank positively identified the suspect as the man who attempted to enter the credit union and who robbed the bank. A straw hat was recovered at the scene of the bank robbery and other items, including cash, were recovered from the suspect's vehicle, authorities said.
After being questioned by sheriff's Robbery detectives and Federal Bureau of Investigation special agents the suspect, Osgood, 47, was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on suspicion of robbery.
