From Niesha Lofing:
Block parties and barbecues will blanket Sacramento neighborhoods this evening as residents celebrate the 25th annual National Night Out.
More than 80 neighborhoods in the city will be hosting ice cream socials, flashlight parades, block parties, potlucks and barbecues in an effort to help combat crime, according to a Sacramento Police Department news release.
Neighborhoods in other areas of the region, including Davis and Elk Grove, also are planning activities.
The nationwide event is intended to raise crime and drug prevention awareness, strengthen communities and generate support for local anti-crime efforts, the release states.
In Sacramento, police officers and city representatives will be attending neighborhood celebrations. Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully is scheduled to attend events in the Fruitridge, Foothill Farms and Citrus Heights areas tonight, according to a news release from Scully's office.
