Residents throughout the Sacramento area Tuesday celebrated the 25th annual National Night Out. Neighbors held block parties and ice cream socials, which were also attended by area law enforcement personnel.
In South Natomas' Jefferson Park, Sacramento Police officer Keith Hoversten and Sonic (left photo), his 96-pound German shepherd K9 dog, visited with residents. Police department officials also distributed fliers detailing neighborhood crime tips.
Here's a few dealing with safety when returning home via car:
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Pay attention to vehicles that appear to be tailing or following you as you approach your home. Drive to a well populated area and call the police, if necessary.
- As you pull into your garage/driveway, be away of individuals on foot in the area.
- Check the mirrors on your car to make sure that no one has managed to skip into the garage and hide around your vehicle.
- Have your house keys ready before exiting the car
- Upon entering your residence, it is recommended that you remain inside the doorway while you watch the garage door close completely.
- It is recommended that, if possible, you not unload items from the car until the garage door is safely closed.
