From Niesha Lofing:
A Sacramento man dubbed the "straw hat bandit" is facing up to 60 year in federal prison after admitting in court to robbing several area banks.
Michael Edward Osgood, 47, on Tuesday pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence K. Karlton to three counts of bank robbery, a news release from U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott's office stated.
Osgood acquired his nickname because he wore a large-brim straw hat during the robberies.
He was arrested June 9 after robbing the U.S. Bank branch at 3320 Arden Way. Osgood also pleaded guilty to robbing the Sterlent Credit Union at 2648 Watt Avenue on May 12 and the U.S. Bank branch at 2808 Country Club Blvd., Stockton, the release states.
As part of a plea agreement, Osgood also admitted committing four other bank robberies:
April 30: Tri-Counties Bank, 4650 Natomas Blvd., Sacramento.
May 16: Wells Fargo Bank, 8870 Madison Ave., Fair Oaks (top left photo).
May 21: Citibank, 436 Howe Ave., Sacramento.
May 24: U.S. Bank, 5021 Laguna Blvd., Elk Grove.
Osgood faces up to 20 years in federal prison, three years of federal supervised release, a $250,000 fine and restitution for each of the three bank robbery convictions.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 4.
The case was investigated by the Sacramento Violent Crimes Task Force, which includes the FBI, Roseville Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
