From Sandy Louey:
A sting operation at a Woodland commercial building ended up in 12 employers being arrested Wednesday for contracting without a license, investigators said.
The operation was conducted by the Yolo Unlicensed Rapid Apprehension Team, which was set up three years ago to go after employers who are unlicensed contractors or fail to insure their employees, investigators said.
The agencies that participated in the string were the Yolo County District Attorney's Office, the Contractors State License Board, Woodland Police Department, state Department of Industrial Relations, state Department of Insurance, and the Employment Development Department.
The contractors who showed up to bid on a job as part of the string were compiled from consumer complaints and from looking at newspaper and online ads, Lt. Dan Stroski of the district attorney's office said Thursday.
Stroski said 12 employers were arrested by the state license board for contracting without a license. Their names weren't available Thursday.
The industrial relations department also issued civil fines against six of the employers. Bricker Handyman of Fair Oaks, Eagle Nest of Sacramento, Orlando Interior Work of Woodland, Teorres Landscaping of Rancho Cordova, Showcase Drywall of Woodland, and Tile & Stone of Dixon were fined for failing to have workers' compensation insurance, said Dean Fryer, a spokesman with the industrial relations department.
Teorres Landscaping also was fined for paying employees under the table, Fryer said.
