From Niesha Lofing:
An Auburn man is facing a felony attempted murder charge after allegedly attacking a woman with a sword and then barricading himself in a Cool home.
El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies received a reported assault with a deadly weapon at a home in the 2600 block of Westville Trail at 7:59 p.m. Tuesday, sheriff's Sgt. Bryan Golmitz said.
David Burns, 18, had allegedly struck a 46-year-old Placer County woman with a sword, injuring her shoulder, he said. Burns and the victim do not appear to be in a relationship, he said.
Golmitz said Burns is reported to be bipolar and schizophrenic and is not taking his medication.
Deputies located the victim down the street from the home. She had suffered a shoulder injury and complained of pain and was taken to an Auburn-area hospital for treatment.
Deputies set up a perimeter around the house, and neighbors were asked to evacuate to the sheriff's command post.
Deputies made several calls into the home, which went unanswered. They made announcements over a loud speaker from 8:35 until 10:30 p.m. During that time, the sheriff's SWAT team came to the home, Golmitz said.
Burns came out of the home at 10:30 p.m. wearing a dark-colored robe with the hood pulled over his head. The SWAT team took Burns into custody.
A search of the home revealed no other victims, Golmitz said.
Burns was booked into El Dorado County's Placerville jail on suspicion of attempted murder, vandalism and obstructing a public officer.
