From Kim Minugh:
A 25-year-old Carmichael man was booked in the Sacramento County Main Jail this week after he allegedly shook his 6-month-old son to death this summer, according to authorities.
Kevin Harper (left photo) faces charges of murder and assault resulting in the death of a child younger than age 8, said Sacramento County sheriff's Sgt. Tim Curran.
In the early evening of Aug. 21, Harper reportedly called 911 but then decided to bring his unresponsive 6-month-old son to the Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Curran said. That night, the baby was transported to UC Davis Medical Center.
A social worker there called the sheriff's department the next day to report the baby's injuries. Curran said doctors told deputies the baby appeared to be the victim of non-accidental trauma.
The baby died the next day, Curran said.
The baby's mother, a 24-year-old woman who lived with Harper, was not home at the time the baby became unresponsive, Curran said. Child Protective Services has no involvement with the family, Curran said.
A warrant was issued earlier this month for Harper's arrest, and he was taken into custody in the San Diego area last week, Curran said. He was booked into the Main Jail on Tuesday.
