A 21-year-old man is facing assault charges after a family fight prompted a 911 call and ended with officers shooting the man and his grandmother.

Sacramento County sheriff's dispatchers received a 911 hang-up call at 1:36 a.m. today from a home in the 10900 block of Gadsten Way.

Before the call was disconnected, dispatchers heard arguing in the background, said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran.

Dispatchers called back, which is standard procedure for hang-ups, but couldn't determine why they were called and sent two officers to the home.

A Sacramento County sheriff's deputy and Rancho Cordova police officer were confronted at the scene by Damian Dominick Lackey (left photo) in the front yard armed with what appeared to be a handgun, Curran said.

"They gave him multiple commands to drop the weapon," Curran said. "He failed to comply and raised the gun and pointed it at them."

Both officers shot several times, hitting the Lackey once in the upper leg, Curran said.

"Unfortunately, the subject's 65-year-old grandmother also was hit by the officers' gunfire," he said.

The woman, who was standing in the doorway of the home behind her grandson, was shot in the calf.

Lackey and his grandmother were taken to a local hospital. Their injuries are not life threatening.

"It was a very realistic-looking weapon with a scope mounted on it," he said. "This has affected his life, his grandmother's life, his uncle's life. It's a very unfortunate situation."

Investigators said Lackey, who previously lived at the home with his grandmother and 44-year-old uncle, returned to the home for an unknown reason. The family subsequently got into an argument.

Lackey allegedly threatened his grandmother and uncle with the weapon, which is why authorities were called, Curran said.

Lackey was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail in Sacramento County Main Jail.

Lackey, who is "known to law enforcement," is scheduled to be arraigned Friday, Curran said.

Both officers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by sheriff's homicide detectives, internal affairs and the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.

The 27-year-old Rancho Cordova police officer is a 6 1/2-year veteran of the department. The sheriff' deputy, 30, has been with the department for five years, Curran said.

Q: What happened with the case regarding Marc McCormick? He was accused of videotaping a woman in her home and was arrested. He lives in my neighborhood and I see him all the time. Were charges dropped?

A: According to Sacramento Superior Court online records, misdemeanor charges have been filed against Mark William McCormick, alleging that he used a camcorder or other instrument to view an individual in a place where there was an expectation of privacy, trespassing and peeping.

His next court date is June 4.

According to Sacramento police logs, McCormick, 40, was arrested March 8 after the victim reported that a friend had entered her home without her knowledge to secretly videotape her.
