Authorities arrested an 18-year-old Stockton woman Saturday night after her car slammed into a tree in Elk Grove, killing one of her passengers.
The driver, Jia Hui Chen, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. She was being held Sunday on $30,000 bail in the Sacramento County Main jail, according to online jail records.
Officer Michael Bradley, a California Highway Patrol spokesman, said a street race may be the possible cause of the accident.
Chen was traveling at a high speed at 9:40 p.m. Saturday on southbound Highway 99 near Grant Line Road when she lost control of the 2000 Honda Civic, the CHP said. A white Honda CRX also was seen, the CHP said.
Her car left the west shoulder of the freeway, broadsiding an oak tree. The CHP said the car split in half, ejecting the passenger in the right rear seat.
The 28-year-old Stockton man was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said. On Sunday, the Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified him as Koob Vang.
Neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in the accident, Bradley said.
Chen was not injured, while 19-year-old woman sitting in the front passenger seat had minor injuries.
Both were taken to UC Davis Medical Center, the CHP said.
Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the CHP at (916) 861-1300.
