From Niesha Lofing:
Sacramento police plan to announce several news ways residents can relay crime tips and obtain criminal information.
Under new guidelines, citizens will be able to text message or use the Internet to give a anonymous tips to police through Crime Alert, a program to help law enforcement identify criminal suspects and reward people for information leading to arrests, a police news release states.
Residents have had to call in crime tips. Crime Alert's phone tip line also will remain available.
Police spokesman Officer Konrad Von Schoech said the text program will be run by a third-party company which will keep the text messenger's identity anonymous.
Comcast on Demand customers in Sacramento and surrounding communities will be able to view criminal suspect profiles 24 hours a day. The service will include information on how viewers who know something about the suspects can contact police anonymously, the release states.
Von Schoech said information such as suspect descriptions and photos will be available through the new feature.
"It'll also give you instructions on how to contact Crime Alert," he said.
Further details about the new Comcast service and additions to Crime Alert will be released at the news conference this afternoon at police headquarters on Freeport Boulevard.
