From Bill Lindelof:
The woman accused of killing two people in El Dorado County last year has died, the county sheriff's department said today.
Dana Leigh Dodd (left), 49, died from natural causes just after midnight Tuesday in the El Dorado County Jail, authorities said.
"She was in the infirmary with a terminal illness," said sheriff's spokesman Lt. Bryan Golmitz. "It was not unexpected. She had been in a hospice program."
Dodd was awaiting trial on charges related to the shooting deaths last year of two women, Patrica Sackett, 46, and Janet Emily Bergen, 73, who died July 17, 2008, at a home in the 3900 block of Leisure Lane in Pleasant Valley, about 15 miles southeast of Placerville.
Reports at the time of the killings said a woman at the Pleasant Valley home called 911 saying she had been shot. When deputies arrived at the home they found the two women with gunshot wounds.
One died at the scene and the other died while being taken to the hospital. When Dodd was charged in the shootings, reports indicated that she was allegedly waiting for her ex-boyfriend at the home when the two women showed up.
Motive for the shooting was never fully explained by authorities. Deputies found Dodd after the shooting in the mountainside neighborhood.
