From Bill Lindelof:
A 29-year-old man was shot to death this morning, reportedly within the hearing of his girlfriend with whom he had quarreled moments before.
Sacramento County sheriff's investigators are piecing together what led up to the killing in a neighborhood heavy with apartments near Folsom Boulevard and La Quinta Drive, east of the Sacramento city limits.
At 5:02 a.m., the sheriff's department received call from a neighborhood resident who reported hearing gunfire and a woman screaming.
When deputies arrived at the 2800 block of La Quinta, they found the victim, identified by Sacramento County Coroner's officials as James Davis of Sacramento, in the street. Paramedics arrive and pronounced the man dead from a gunshot wound to the upper body.
Detectives learned that the victim and his girlfriend earlier had quarreled in their apartment. The victim then left, followed by his girlfriend.
Sheriff's department spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran said the man went around the corner of the apartment building when the girlfriend heard a gunshot.
"The girlfriend is cooperating with deputies and is not under arrest," Curran said.
No witnesses have come forward, no weapon or shell casings have been recovered, and authorities don't have a suspect, Curran said.
