From Gina Kim:
A 22-year-old Yuba City woman died Saturday after swerving into on-coming traffic on State Route 20 and losing control of her vehicle.
Lorretta Deniz was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Sutter County Sheriff's Department.
Just after 8 p.m., Deniz was driving east on what's known as Colusa Highway, near Drexler Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A witness told police that Deniz crossed the center line into on-coming traffic, swerved right in response and then overcorrected, ending up in the wrong lane again. The front left of Deniz's Chevrolet hit the front left of a Ford van driven by Adolfo Jimenez, 23, of Oakland, police said.
The van, which had 10 passengers including an infant, flipped over Deniz's vehicle, skidding to a stop on the dirt shoulder.
Nine out of the 11 people people in the van suffered injuries and were taken to five hospitals. Most were not wearing seatbelts, police said.
Jimenez, the driver, suffered a broken leg and was taken to Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville. The other passengers received spine and pelvic fractures, police said. The infant, a 6-month-old girl who was not in a car seat, was taken to UC Davis Medical Center with a skull fracture, according to police.
The passenger in Deniz's vehicle suffered minor injuries.
