A 32-year-old man suspected of raping a woman in midtown Sacramento and attempting to rape another one on Del Paso Boulevard was arrested Friday afternoon, police said.
Sacramento police spokesman Sgt. Norm Leong said Domingo Vargas, who has no fixed address, was arrested at about 4:30 p.m. at a recycling center in the 2200 block of Northgate Boulevard.
Forensic evidence processed by the Sacramento County District Attorney's crime laboratory linked Vargas to the attack in midtown, Leong said. Police Department investigators then used further forensic evidence to link Vargas to the Del Paso Boulevard attack.
The first attack happened Jan. 25 at about 1 a.m. on K Street between 19th and 20th streets. The victim had been out with friends and was walking in the area, usually crowded on weekend nights, when Vargas allegedly grabbed her, knocked her unconscious, dragged her into a parking lot and raped her, Leong said.
In the second attack, the victim was sleeping in the passenger side of the car in the 1300 block of Del Paso Boulevard on June 7 at about 1:15 a.m., Leong said.
Vargas allegedly got into the car and got on top of her to try to sexually assault her, Leong said. The victim fought back and made enough noise to attract the attention of a security guard at a nearby bar, who gave chase, Leong said.
Detectives are reviewing other cold cases to determine if Vargas might also be responsible for them, Leong said.
