From Chelsea Phua:
Sacramento police are questioning an 18-year-old Kennedy High School student suspected of breaking into the school's computer system.
Kennedy High School and Sacramento City Unified School District officials informed police Tuesday afternoon that they believe they "had a computer intrusion into their system," said Sgt. Norm Leong, police spokesman.
Leong said the police's high-tech unit and school's information technology staff are examining what information was accessed and how much of it could have been compromised.
Leong said the student has not been arrested and is cooperating with authorities, who have not yet determined a motive.
The school's IT staff had noticed unusual activities on the system and traced them to the student, Leong said.
"We are working closely with the police," said Maria Lopez, the school district's spokeswoman.
Lopez said the school principal, Felisberto Cedros, will communicate with parents as needed.
Reached by cell phone Wednesday night, Cedros said he can't divulge details, but acknowledged that no personal information such as credit card or Social Security numbers have been compromised.
"The kid didn't get anywhere beyond school issues," Cedros said, declining to elaborate further.
