The man at the center of an extensive police search in downtown this morning was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail today - on a misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of narcotics.
Sgt. Norm Leong, a police spokesman, said officers could not prove that 29-year-old Jonathan Robert Adams was behind the alleged threats that prompted a search and SWAT team call-out lasting more than four hours.
Adams is being held in lieu of $1,000, according to booking records.
The ordeal began just before 6:30 a.m., when police received a report that an armed subject had threatened security guards near the parking garage at 7th and Q streets, Leong said. The man confronted the guards, and a third party who approached them told police that he had seen the suspect with what he believed to be a rifle, Leong said.
Officers surrounded the garage about 7 a.m., setting up a two-block perimeter because of the possibility that the man could be armed and hiding in the garage, Leong said. They also evacuated buildings in the area.
The perimeter stayed up for over four hours while SWAT teams arrived and moved into the garage. SWAT teams deployed gas into one loft and later determined that the garage was empty, Leong said.
Police obtained information about who the suspect might be and the car he might be driving and located the car on Serra Way, Leong said. The suspect was detained without incident just before noon as he was walking toward the car, Leong said.
A pellet rifle was found nearby, Leong said.
The suspect later was identified as Adams. Earlier today, police indicated that Adams faced charges of making threats, but those could not be substantiated, Leong said.
