A 20-year-old man is in Yolo County Jail after allegedly stealing a van filled with meals that were to be distributed to people who are homeless.
West Sacramento police reported that members of the Broderick Christian Center this morning had a van loaded with meals that they intended to pass out to homeless people at the Broderick boat ramp. The van's motor was running, and the driver saw a man get into the vehicle and drive away.
The victim followed the van while calling for police.
West Sacramento police officers quickly located the van at Jefferson Boulevard and Sacramento Avenue and sought to stop it. The driver of the vehicle failed to yield, and led officers on a low-speed pursuit through the Broderick and Bryte neighborhoods, according to a Police Department news release.
The van then entered the freeway at the Jefferson onramp heading west, and continued onto eastbound Interstate 80, attempting to exit at Reed Avenue. The driver lost control and crashed into a fence.
The driver of the stolen vehicle, identified as Tasi Grass, 20, was taken into custody without incident and booked into Yolo County Jail on suspicion of vehicle theft.
Police said the vehicle and meals were recovered and returned to Broderick Christian Center for distribution.
