After leading police on a chase from the city of Sacramento south along the river past the unincorporated community of Hood, the driver of a fleeing car finally stopped and surrendered to officers along with her passenger.
Few details were immediately available, although police said the incident started when an officer attempted to make a traffic stop. The female driver fled and the officer called dispatch around 10 p.m. to inform them of the chase. At that time the chase was near the intersection of Howe and Northrop avenues. When police ran the license plate of the car through their computer system, it was registered as stolen.
In a riveting half-hour ride, a police officer could be heard calmly relaying the progress of the chase over the crackle of the police scanner. A police helicopter relayed traffic information as the cars sped from Land Park, down Freeport Road and on to River Road.
Assisting officers eventually set up a spike strip and managed to blow out the tires of the woman's vehicle. The woman continued for a way with her tires sparking, but eventually stopped the car on River Road near Randall Island Road. Officers released a police dog, but recalled the animal when the woman and her passenger raised their hands and indicated they would surrender.
No more details were immediately available. California Highway Patrol and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department assisted in the chase.
