The driver of a vehicle that led Sacramento police on a short pursuit along Highway 50 this morning before rolling over on the highway may have wrecked the car intentionally, a police spokesman said.
Officers were responding to reports of a hit-and-run on Power Inn Road near Highway 50 around 8:20 a.m. when they saw a vehicle leave the scene, said Sacramento Police Department spokesman Officer Konrad von Schoech.
Officers followed the vehicle onto eastbound Highway 50 and, partway into the pursuit, realized that the driver of the vehicle was intentionally trying to hit the center median, von Schoech said. The vehicle then hit the median and rolled over several times east of Bradshaw Road, he said.
When officers approached the vehicle, they saw the female occupant trying to cut herself, von Schoech said. She was detained and taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation, he said.
The woman did not sustain major injuries from the crash, and her role in the original hit-and-run incident is unclear, von Schoech said. It appears that her vehicle may have been hit, as she had rear-end damage to her car, he said.
The pursuit lasted several minutes and California Highway Patrol was also involved.
Another collision occurred in the back-up that resulted from the pursuit and subsequent crash, said CHP spokesman Officer Rich Wetzel.
