Winter break has proven costly for Sacramento school districts as vandals, thieves and arsonists have hit the empty campuses.
Area school districts see more property losses in December than any other month, according to a Sacramento City Unified School District press release.
Most area school districts began winter break Dec. 20 and will be off until Jan. 3. While the campuses are dark, districts are asking the community to help watch school properties.
"Any time there is a break there is an uptick in vandalism and burglaries," said Twin Rivers Police Department spokesman Officer William Cho. "We rely on the community to keep watch on the properties. A majority of the calls we get are from neighbors who see suspicious behavior. They have helped us catch quite a few suspects."
