Nevada County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a man whose body was found along Interstate 80 at Boreal Ridge Road near Truckee.
The man's body was found Wednesday in a 10-foot-deep crevice in the snow less than a half-mile from the highway, said Nevada County Sheriff's Lt. Joe Salivar.
No signs of foul play were detected, but the investigation is ongoing, Salivar said. The man has not been identified because of the condition of the body.
An autopsy is pending.
Sheriff's deputies found a single set of footsteps leading from the site of an abandoned car on the side of eastbound I-80 to the body, Salivar said.
"It appears that either he had an accident and slipped down or somehow got down in there and couldn't get out," Salivar said.
The man had likely been in the crevice for more than a few days, but less than a week, Salivar said.
California Highway Patrol officers located the abandoned car on Sunday and had it towed on Tuesday, Salivar said.
A cell phone was found in the car with messages indicating that people were trying to reach the phone's owner, he said.
Sheriff's department deputies went to the area on Wednesday afternoon. Search and rescue personnel also responded, and the body was found later that day, Salivar said.
