A Carmichael man died today after his vehicle stalled on Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova and was rear-ended by another vehicle.
The Sacramento County Coroner's Office website identified him as Oscar Frayer, 54.
Officer Jasper Begay of the California Highway Patrol said Frayer was driving a 1990 Ford Tempo westbound on Highway 50 east of the White Rock Road pedestrian overcrossing at 11:35 a.m. when the car experienced mechanical problems and stalled in the slow lane.
Begay said a 50-year-old Rancho Cordova man driving a Chevy Tahoe entered the freeway westbound from the Zinfandel Drive onramp and was traveling 60 to 65 mph when he came up behind the stalled Tempo. The driver of the Tahoe looked to the left to check for traffic and when he looked back he was unable to stop before rear-ending the Tempo, Begay said.
Frayer and his passenger, a 44-year-old woman also of Carmichael, were taken to UC Davis Medical Center where Frayer died. Begay said Frayer's passenger suffered moderate injuries. The driver of the Tahoe sustained minor injuries but did not go to the hospital.
Begay said there was no evidence at the scene to indicate that drugs or alcohol were factors the crash, and no citations have been issued. He said the accident remains under investigation.
