James Ray Alden told a Sacramento Superior Court jury today that he had nothing to do with the stabbing death of Richard Seeger.
He never knew the victim, never robbed him and never stabbed him the morning of April 9, 2009, Alden testified. In fact, Alden said, the morning Seeger died, he was passed out after a hazy night filled with beer, rum and marijuana.
Alden stands accused of murder, second-degree robbery and auto theft in connection with the 57-year-old man's death at Carmichael Park. Seeger had been living out of his car at the time and was found dead in the park's parking lot.
Under questioning from his attorney, Alden went on to cast doubt on his former roommate, Bobby Brady, saying Brady made a bizarre comment later that day about having been propositioned for sex at the park and that he "(messed) him up."
Asked whether he questioned his roommate further about the incident, Alden said no.
"Bobby had a very different sense of humor," Alden said. "I just took it as Bobby joking."
Brady also was charged with murder, second-degree robbery and auto theft, but the murder and theft charges were dismissed earlier this month, according to Superior Court records. In December, he pleaded no contest to felony possession of stolen property, and was sentenced to six years state prison, the records show.
Alden's testimony will continue this afternoon.
