An elderly Citrus Heights woman fired her handgun to try to stop burglars from entering her home on Tuesday, police said.
Lt. Gary Hendricks said the victim was home about 1:45 p.m. when she heard several loud noises at the front and back doors of her house in the 7700 block of Glen Tree Drive.
In a news release, Hendricks said the victim looked out of the peephole of her front door and saw a man attempting to enter. She went to the back door, where she saw more men trying to break into her home. Hendricks said she then retrieved her handgun and fired to stop the burglars.
When police arrived, they conducted a search but could not find the men.
Hendricks did not divulge the woman's age. He said police are investigating whether she was home alone during the incident, how many people were involved and whether any of the men attempting the break-in was injured. The victim was not hurt, police said.
