The Sacramento Public Library's Arden-Dimick Branch will remain closed until 10 a.m. Saturday, due to damage caused by a Molotov cocktail-type device early today.
About 1,000 books were damaged, mostly from water when fire sprinklers were activated, after somebody dropped a flaming bottle of liquid into the drop box at the library, 891 Watt Ave.
The incident occurred about 3:30 a.m. today and no arrests have been made. However, officials plan to review outdoor security video.
Most of the damage to books occurred in the book drop room. Sprinklers extinguished the blaze but water flooded into the library, soaking carpets.
Soaked hardcover books can probably be restored, said Don Tucker, library facilities manager.
"There appears to be more damage from water than from fire," Rivkah K. Sass, Sacramento Public Library director, said in a written statement. "Water did flow from the book return area and into the main room of the branch, soaking approximately 5,000 square feet of carpet."
No computers or electronic equipment were damaged, and no one was injured. The library staff is working with a restoration company to reopen the building Saturday morning.
Patrons may return materials to any Sacramento Public Library branch. The nearest locations are the Arcade Library, 2443 Marconi Ave., and the Carmichael Library, 5605 Marconi Ave.
