A 30-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly beating a woman and then barricading himself in an apartment complex in West Sacramento.
Police were called to the 2200 block of Michigan Boulevard about 2:50 p.m. regarding a report of an assault in progress. Officers arrived and found a 33-year-old woman with injuries to her face and upper body.
Lt. Tod Sockman of the West Sacramento Police Department said that as Jayson Gibbs, who has a history of violence and previous encounters with police, came out of his apartment and for an unknown reason began beating the woman who walking on the sidewalk with her two small children. Sockman said the woman and Gibbs were not acquainted and there appeared to be no motive for the assault.
Gibbs allegedly punched the woman repeatedly until two neighbors came to her aid and stopped the assault.
The woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Gibbs barricaded himself in his apartment and refused to surrender. Police said Gibbs has a criminal history including multiple felony assaults and weapons charges.
About 20 people, residents of the apartment complex and homes on either side of the complex, were evacuated during the standoff as a precaution.
West Sacramento and Davis SWAT teams responded along with the Davis Hostage Negotiation Team. Negotiators made contact with Gibbs and persuaded him to surrender. He was booked into Yolo County Jail on suspicion of felony assault.
