A reported assault that drew a large police presence to Curtis Park on Sunday involved a juvenile client and an employee of the Sacramento Children's Home, authorities said today.
The nature of the assault remained unclear Monday, as Sacramento police officials declined to discuss specifics about the crime or the accusations against the boy, now in custody.
Officer Laura Peck, a police spokeswoman, said she could not further discuss the case because it is still under investigation and "sensitive" in nature.
But the Sacramento Children's Home released a statement Monday identifying the alleged aggressor as a client of the home, which provides care for abused and neglected children. The statement also identified the victim as a young female employee who "attempted to closely supervise" the client when he allegedly attacked.
The employee was "following all protocols" at the time, the statement noted.
"We would like to express our extreme regret that our staff and client were involved in an incident such as this one," Chief Executive Officer Roy Alexander wrote in the statement. "The safety of our residents and our staff has been our top priority for 144 years, and continues to be our top priority."
Alexander said in the statement that the suspect would not be allowed back to the facility.
After 7 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the 2700 block of Sutterville Road for the report of a female victim being assaulted, Peck said. The suspect had fled the scene on foot, but later was caught by a police canine.
The suspect was treated for minor injuries to his arm as a result of the dog bite, Peck said.
