One man was arrested and another is being sought after Woodland police interrupted a possible metal theft in progress early this morning.
An officer noticed two men and a pickup truck in the 1200 block of Churchill Downs Drive at 4:53 a.m. The men were entering an outdoor storage yard of a closed business, which contained numerous items of copper wire and other metals, according to a Police Department news release. Upon seeing the officer, the men ran off, passing through other properties belonging to other businesses that were closed for the night, police said.
Additional police officers responded, and after an approximately 45-minute search of the area, one man was spotted as he crossed in the 1300 block of East Beamer Street. Two officers chased him through the field and took him into custody without incident. He was identified as Matthew Jeffery Coulter, 32, of Dunnigan.
The second suspect was not found.
Coulter was booked into Yolo County Jail on suspicion of attempted grand theft, possessing burglary tools and an illegal knife.
Police said they are continuing their investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Woodland Police Department at (530) 661-7800, or police dispatch at (530) 666-2411.
